Philip de László: European Royalty and Aristocracy

László Kaiser Wilhem II

Figure 1.--László has left us an extraordinary record of European royals and aristocrats before and after World War I (1900s-30s). There is nothing quite like this body of work in the artistic record. And he captures in most cases what the photographer often can not. With Kaiser Wilhelm he succeeds all to well. The Kaiser poses in all his pompous glory. We suspect that László for many of his portraits made suggestions about posing. Here we are guessing he just let Wilhelm free to create the image of his dreams (1911). This was just before the Germans launched World War I. We suspect that other European royals would have been embarrassed to pose in this way. One can see what Europeans at the time faced. Note the slashes by a Red Army soldier (1945) .

László has left us an extraordinary record of European royals and aristocrats before and after World War I (1900s-30s). There is nothing quite like this body of work in the artistic record. And he captures in moist cases what the photographer often can not. Unfortunately one of his most disappointing portraits is the Princess Elizabeth (1933). It is a beautiful portrait but fails to capture her essence. What we see is basically cupie doll. With Kaiser Wilhelm he succeeds all to well. The Kaiser poses in all his pompous glory. No other royal posed like Wilhelm in such self aggrandizing, Wagnerian surroundings. Here at HBC/CIH, we are primarily focused on children, but as the László portrait displays so much of Wilhelm's character, we are archiving it here. we suspect that László for many of his portraits made suggestions about posing. Here we are guessing he just let Wilhelm free to create the image of his dreams (1911). This was just before the Germans launched World War I.
