George Sanders weas a majpr portraitist during the late-Georgian and early Vicorian era. He mostly painted the English airistocracy. He also produced copies of the Dutch Masters which were in demand in England. George was born in Edinburgh (1774). Sanders received a clasical education and some artistic training, although biographical information is limited. He trained under John Ramsay, one of the most important Scottish artists, primarily focused on landsscappes. Sanders primarily painted portraits, both in Scotland nd England. There are many English portraits, the result of the more affluent English clientelle. He is noted for his ability to capture dignity and refinement, much appreciazted by the his wealhy clients. Thee are many Earls, Dukes, Lords -- dressed in opulent attire as well as well as views of richly appointed interiors. As a result, there are many of his paintings in the National Gallery collection. Thus we see a valuable representation of British Georgian and Victorian society. He did some genre scenes, but portraits were his forte. We see little evidence of Scottish attire. The Scottish upperclass modstly wore English fashions until well into the Victorian era.
