Crabtree Boy (United States, 1890s)

Here we have a cabinet card portait done in an unusual close-up pose. Which is helpful becaue we can make ouit details about his suit. But it is This cabinet cardportrat provides us the family name, but not the boy's first name. Often we have first names, but not the family name. In this case we have the family name--Crabtree. The studio has written his mother's name on the back of the card because she must have placed the order for the portrait -- "For Fannie Crabtree". Which is also interesting because in such instances the wife often used her husbands first name in the 19th century. The boy was from Bushnell, Illinois. This was a small farming town in west-central Illinois created by the railroads. It was most famous as the place where modern oats processing was developed. The boy wears a two piece suit wth Norfolk styling, but without the self-belt. There is a hankie tucked into a poket The suit material has a pattern, but mot a loud one. It is a knee pants suit won with long stockings. The cabinet card has gilded edges. He wears his suit wih a patterned blouse which does not show off very well and medium (for the time) collar. The boy looks to be about 5-years old. The portrait is undated, but we would guess was taken about 1890. The studio was Bushnell & Foster in Blandinville, Illinois.
