The dealer here could not determine the format of this cased portrait. It looks rather like a color tinted ambrotype to us. The portrait shows a boy about 6 years old. It is enclosed in a small leather bound 2.5" X 3", single latch case with a velvet interior. The case contains a handwritten note identifying the boy as "Johnnie Haily, Grandma Winklers brother, who died of lockjaw at age 8". It is a little difficult to make out details of the boy's outfit, but he has a white collar. Note the wide sleeves a style that was popilar in the 1850s, but disappeeared in the 60s. A close look at sleeve cuff shows that he seems to not only be wearing a white blouse but a darker top as well. Also notice how the blouuse sleeve is gathered at the cuff. Johnnie had longish hair, cut sharply at ear level. The portrait is undated, but looks like the 1850s to us.
