Jeannie Hancock (United States, 1840s)

Jeannie Hancock
Figure 1.-- This ⅙ plate tinted Daguerrotype showng a girl with full ringlets and tinted basket of flowers with heavily gilded bowl, chain, and necklace. We would guess the portrat was taken in the 1840s, but theraly-50s is possible. Her dress retains just a tinge of blue tinting, very nice large oval mat and preserver. The Dag has an immaculate full leather case with original spine, working clasp, and outstanding condition matching designs. Cased Dags in the 1840s and early-50s had hand tooled leather covers. At the mid-50s we begin to see gutta-percha covers. Original silk pillow completes this near mint case which has protected this pretty girl probably since the 1840s. Also included is a business card, circa 1950s, which states that this is, "Jeannie Hancock, 2nd cousin to John Hancock"..

She may be related to the John Hancock who signed the Declaration of Independence, of course removed a couple generations. Notice the pantalettes. Americans in the first half of the 19th century thught it imprtant that children;s legs should be covered, mostly with panalettes. Then in the vsecond half of the century it was long stockings.
