Figure 1.-- This is a cabinet card portrait of Mr. Hartmann and his family of five children. They a all are very young, anout 3-10 , amazing for a group of 5 children. The younger boys are dressed in what looks like simple jerseys (sweaters). The older boys wear sailor suits with lanyards. The boys have white Eton collars, incluing the biys wearing sailor suits. Notice that the boys also including the sailor suit boys wear boaters. Their little sister wears a plain dress with kace trim..

This is a cabinet card portrait of Mr. Hartmann and his family of five children. They a all are very young, about 3-11 years old, amazing for a family group of 5 children. The younger boys are dressed in what looks like simple jerseys (sweaters). The older boys wear sailor suits with lanyards. The boys have white Eton collars, incluing the biys wearing sailor suits. Notice that the boys also including the sailor suit boys wear boaters. Their little sister wears a plain dress with kace trim. Unfortunately the portarit is not dated. We would guess that it dates to the 1880s, but we are not at all sure. The only other information we have about the Hartmann portrait was that the studio was W. Perry in Sandgate, Kent. Sandgate is a seaside town situated at the Dover Narrowes. The studio was located on The Broadway (High Street). A rail line was opened giving access to Londoners and other vacationers (1874).
