Figure 1.-- This is a cut-aweay jacket outfit worn by Edward Howard Hutchinson in the 1850s. It was an early appearance of cut-way jackets and shortehned-length pants. Notice that the frilled collar and cut-away jacket cuffs have nothimg to do with the blouse worn under the jacket. The blouse buttons on to thev knn pants. Here we have an outfit worn by Edward Howard Hutchinson (1852-1938). Edward was born in Buffalo, N.Y. (1852). He received his education in Public School No. 10, and in Central High School of that city. High schoolsat the time were small with only a small number of stydents. While preparing to enter Harvard University. His studies were interrupted by failing eyesight. He purued a career in business. Edward wore this cut-away jacket which would havebeen how noys from substntil, not neceasrily rich familiers were dressed. The vjacket is done in blue silk velvet and trimmed with black/blue silk ribbon at hem and cuffs, along with detached white cut=away lace. It was lined with blue silk ribbon at hem and cuffs, lined with blue silk; corded acorn button front closure, Edward had a blue silk velvet with silk cord binding cap which had silk ribbon bow and two tassels on left. This is a kind of cockade with tassels added. There is a ; glazed kid strap on visor fastened with two jet buttons; red painted cotton headband, pink silk lining (discolored) attached to crown in 8-pointed star. It orobably woud have been worm in the mid-1850s when Edward was about 5 years old. There are stripped knee pants--the beginning of shortened-length pants. This is something difficult to assess from the photographic record. So many Dags and Ambros are posed focusing om the upper torso. Note that the pants do not match the jacket, perhaps only slightly im the color of the stripes. The ides of suits with matching jackets and pants was just beginning to catch on in the 1850s.
