Figure 1.--A cabinet portait of Howard Lee shows him wearing some kind of French royal costume. It was a party costume for fancy dress affairs. I'm not sure Howard was too impressed with his costume. He has a disgusted look on him. Our guess is that mother selected the costume. We know that he was 6 years old.

Howard Lee (United States, 1892)

A cabinet portait of Howard Lee shows him wearing some kind of French royal costume. It was a party costume for fancy dress affairs. I'm not sure Howard was too impressed with his costume. He has a disgusted look on him. Our guess is that mother selected the costume. We know that he was 6 years old. There is writing on the back of the card, but some words are difficult to make out. "Howard Lee age six years. This is a fancy dress that Howard wore to [Mahbus?]. To a fancy dress party given to the children's Christmas." The card was enscribed "For Aunt Francis" Rhe stufio was [Okhauss?] in St. Louis. This would have been an expensive costume, so we know Howard came from an affluent family. The portrait was taken in 1892. Fancy dress costumes were very popular because of the growing fortunes being accumulated in industrial America.
