This 1909 cabinet card portrait shows Mercel Pennebaker and his fithful pooch Sport. Mercel wears a flat cap and what looks like a brand new pair of overalls. Sport is perched on a block to better pose him with Mercel. Mrcel looks to be bout 10 years old. Interestingly 1909 is about when we begin to see large numbers of overalls in rural schools. Mercel and sport were from Burg, Missouri. This is a small unincorporated town in southeastern Missouri. Mercel presumably was a farm boy. We thought he might be a factory worker but his cap and age makes a farm boy more likekly. We rarely see boys wearing overalls before the late-1900s decade, but then a sudden change too place. Cabinet cards in the 1900s decade tended to be very plain, this one was decorated with an embossed bow. Burg was not even an incorporated town, but it had a post office and photogrphic studio.
