Jimmy and Margaret Stouffer (United States, 1937)

Here we have a 1937 press photo of siblings Margaret (b1929) and James (Jimmy) Stouffer (b1932). They wld have been about 5-8 years old. They were photographed in their home, we think in Lakewood, Ohio near Cleveland. We have no isea whu the press photographed them. They are related to the Ohio Stouffer family. one of Cleeland's most important families. The Stouffer began operating a dairy (1914) which grewinto a major food service corportion. They next began operating restaurants. They incoporated in the same year Margeret was born (1929). This was not a propitious year to launch a new company. It was when the Depression began. At the time this photograph was taken, the forzen food business was just beginning. I would not go big time until after World War II (1941-45), but the family was alredy well off. Their father was Vernon Bigelow Stouffer (b1901). He played a huge role in developng the frozen food industry in America and was an owner of the Cleveland Indians. He died from a heart attack (1974). James died shortly after his father (1979), only about 46 years old. Their home was an upper end house with a beautiful view of Lake Erie. The children are smartly dressed in classic styles. Jimmy wears a classic junior Eton short pants suit and knee socks with a real detachable Eton collar. By the 1940s actual detachable Eton collrs had disappeared and boys wore these suits with blouses that had attached, smaller collars. Margaret wears a velvet dress with a lacy Peter Pan collar and a large matching hairbow to complete her outfit.
