Unidentified Tangier Boy (Morocco, 1880s-90s)

Figure 1.-- We have found a portrait from the late 19th century showing an unidentified boy in Tangier. He wears a rough shirt like garment had a shaved head with a single plited strand. We do not know how common this was. This was one of a series of images took in Tangier and sold to European and American tourists H. Cavilla, a photographer with a studio lovated near the Btitish Consulate. The caption to the portrair read, "A very common type. Shaven head with long, singel tuft of plaited hair. This course, shirt-like garment of the country-folk gives a somber tone to the crowded street."
