Belgian Boys Activity Clothes: Play

Figure 1.--Here we see a Belgian boy with a great 1940s/early-1950s style toy bus, no dout his prised possession. The photgraph was probably taken in the early-1950s. Notice the bib-front corduroy pants.

Of course play is a major interest of children. It is what children like to do more than anything else. And there are many play activities Some of the most important are toys, primarily for play in or around the home. Here we see ba boy with a great oy bus. We do not yet have much information on the toys that Belgian children played with. We suspect that they were tge dame as French, Dutch and German children played with, but we have very little information at this time. We see a Belgian boy playing with an electric train during Chistmas which is a scene that could have been replivated in any of those countries. And there are games. These can be games played at home or outside with friends. We do not know of any destinctive Belgian toys or games. A popular game is atag game--tap the line. The primary sport popular with chilftrm from an early point was soccer (football). Belgian children's play seems similar to that in neghboring countries. We have begun to collect photgraphs of both to lean more about childhood in Belgium and play clothes. There are a range of vehicles for children such as trikes and scooters. Boys also had bikes, but bikes were mot just for children. Until after World War II, workers had bikes to get to work. Cars were not some thing that most workers could aford. We have seen images of the Dutch using bikes, we have seen less about Belgium before the War, but believe the same was true of Belgium. Before the War this was in part because workers could not afford cars. Since the post-War European economic miracle, beginning with the German economic miracle, European workers, at least in the West, like American workers, could aford cars. Even so bikes have remained popular.
