We know this was the Wilfred Frances, but we do not know where they were from. All we know is that gthey were vacationing in Wales. The photograph was taken in Rhyl, a seaside resort in northern Wales at the mouth of the River Clwyd. We are guessing that they are an English family on vacation. Frances certainly is not a Welsh name. The writing is a bit difficult to read, but says something like, "From Miss Gifford
Frances Family Taken Ryle North Wales July 3rd 1914 For Miss Culff." Click on the image if you think that you can decphier old writing. The date is interesting, the tranquil summer before the outbreak of World War I. There are four young children about 1-7 years old. The girl and baby wear white dresses. The spade and bucket the girl is holding are sure evidence that there are vacationing beach goers. The boys wear rather strange print blouses with some sailor features. The children wear what look like sneakers wihout any hosiery, another sure sign of beach going. They boy wears what look like short pants, an early indication of the trend away from knee pants that had dominated boys wear.
