English Boys' Headwear Streamers: Chronology

boys streamers
Figure 1.--Here we see a CDV portrait of a little Ebglish with his baby sister holding his toy sailboat. Therev is information about the children on the back, but all we can make out is that the portrasit was taken in June 1891. The studio was Warwick Brooks in Manchester.

We believe English children began wearing stramers in the 19th century,, but we are not sure just when. They are mosdt associated with sailor headwear, both caps and hats. But they are also associated with Scottish bonnets (headwear), especially Glengaries. But it is the sailor headwear for whicvh the streamers were most important. But both of these were introfuced as childfren's headwer by Queen Victoria and Prince Alfred. and at the same tme for Prince Berie their eldest son (1840s). As far as we know this was the frst point as wgich boys begn wearing streamers. At least we have not noted streamers before the 19th century, but of course this ishen photograph appeared and we begin to get larger mumber of imsges. The streamers were no added for boys, but were pasrt of actual military uniforms from which the garments were adapted. Most of our examples come from the laste-19th century and very-early 20th century photographic portraits. Winterhalter painted Betie in a sailor suit (about 1846). It took some time for the style to catch on a a ppular style for boys. Thos onlybegan (1850s). We see other royal families adoptimg he silor look. As a result, the dailor look was well esrabloshed (1860s). The streaners did not catch on as strongly in Eurooe and America, but we see quite a few British boys wearing streamers in the photographic rercord.
