English Boys' Headwear: Flat Cap -- Social Classs

English flat cap
Figure 1.--Here we see a working-class famiy in a family postcard back postcard, probably in the 1910s. Notice all the flat caps.

There seem to have been social-class conventions associated with the flat cap. They seem to have been most common with working-class boys. This is because the flat cap was commony worn by working class men, just as the bowler was a middle-class standard. This seems very obvious in the photographic record. Thus the boys would also be likely to wear flat caps as well. The family here is a good example (figure 1). We do not fully understand the social-class conventions. Golfers for example might wear flat caps and they would be more of an affluent cross section. The social class conventions may have varied chronologically. We are not sure just when he flat cap began to acquite social class connotations. We see some boy swearng them, but a very small proprtion. We only know of one school adopting the style and only for a short period.
