French Outings: Tourism--Chronology

France tourism
Figure 1.--Here we see some children on a Caribbean cruise. At least some were French. Since most of the children have puppets, we suspect that they were an organized grop, probaly French. The photograph came out of a 1930s photo album that belong to a French family. The father was the French consul in Cristobal, Panama. Apparently they took a boat trip vacatin to Cuba.

Tourism beyond the wealthy is amodern concept. We see domestic tourism by the turn-of-the 20th century, made possible by the rail ststem and cheap rail fares. Before World War II, intentional travel was for the wealthy, but there were plenty of domestic tourists. Since World War II, the French have become more mobile. Car ownership is very high, meaning families have great mobility. We are sure to what extent the French us that mobility to travel outside France. We do know like other Europeans the French have used international air flights to travel around the world, usually to beautiful beach resorts. A fairly modern development is oean cruising, although we some local cruising earlier.
