Greek Regions: Cretian Families

Figure 1.--The noted Swiss photographer Fred Boissonnas traveled around Greece and photographed almost all it's regions. One photoraph shows the Mandaka family. The picture was taken in 1911. We see the six boys of the family at the left. Four of them are barefoot but the two older are wearing a pair of traditional Cretan boots. Their clothes are interesting too. The two older seem to wear a traditional costume.

We have some limited Information about Cretian families. The photograph here shows a Crete family in 1929 (figure 1). They look much like similar families would look in rural areas of Grece itself. Hopefully as we learn more about Crete we will learn more about destinctive clothing trends on Crete.

Unknown Family

A photograph shows a peasant family on Crete in 1919. Their two boys wear plain dark dresses, still common for younger at the time. Another photograph taken in 1929 shows the same family standing outside their white-washed home. We do not know their name. The boys wear short pants outfits (gigure 2). The father, but not the boys wears a necktie. One boy wears a short pants suit and another appears to be wearing a sailor suit. It is hard to male out what the third older brother is wearing, Both boys wear closed-toe sandals without socks. The boys wear dark sandals, but I am not sure about the color. The girls also wear sandals, but their sandals are white. The boys have short hair cuts, but not as short as we have seen in some other photographs.

Mandaka Family

The noted Swiss photographer Fred Boissonnas traveled around Greece and photographed almost all it's regions. One photoraph shows the Mandaka family. A HBC reader reports, "I have seen other photos by Boissonnas of the family in photo expositions. I believe that it was a big and wealthy family. The picture was taken in 1911. We see the six boys of the family at the left. Four of them are barefoot but the two older are wearing a pair of traditional Cretan boots. Their clothes are interesting too. The two older seem to wear a traditional costume. The family was prosperous because of the women's clothes. I assume that the young boys went barefoot not because they were poor but because it was used to.
