Hungarian Boys Clothes: Skirted Garments

Figure 1.--These unidentified children of a Budapest family looks to have been taken in the 1880s. The children look o be abot6-12 years of age. One child is obviously a boy and another obviously a girl. We are not sure about the younger child. He or she is wearing a polkadot dress like the older girl, only it is not pleated. We think the younger child is a boy, but thee is no way to be sure. The stdio was GosxlethJ [scrip indistinct] in Budapest.

Younger European boys wre a variety skirted garments. We have, however, not archived many photographs of Hungarian boys wearing skirted garments. We suspect that rather like Germans boys this was less common than for may other countries. Our Hungarian rchive is, howevr very small ans as a result, we can not yet make any valid assessmnts. We notices Hungarian biys wearing smocks and tunics. We have not yet found images of boys wearing dresses.

Dresses

Younger European boys for several centuries wore dresses. Conventions apparently varied from country to country, at least by the 19th century. At this time we have no idea to what extenbt Hyungaran boys wore dresses. Our 19th century Hungarian archive is too limited to mke any valid ssessments. We suspect that trends were similar to Austria and Germany, but we are unale to confirm this yet.

Smocks

We are unsure how common smocks were. We have no information on the 19th century. We do know that school children commonly wore them in the 20th century. As far as we ca tell, this was after World War II and the Communist take over. At least some Hungarian boys wore school smocks. Many unbuttoned them after school. This suggests that the boys were anxious to take them off as quickly as possible after school. I do not think that they were commonly worn except for school. A film shows front buttoning blue smocks. I'm not sure what styles other schools had.

Tunics

Tunics werevery popular garments in Europe during the 19th century. This was probably true of Hungary as well, but our Hungarian archive is very limited. We notice a Hungarian boy from a fashionable family wearing a tunic suit with vloomer knickers, probbly in the early 1870s.
