We do not yet have a lot of information on Hungarian hair styling. Our Hungarian archive is still limited. We see a lot of school-age Hungarian boys in the late-19th and early-20th century century with close-cropped hair. Wee are not sure about the early-19th century, but thanks to photography we can tell it was the case by the late-19th century. Nor are we sure why boy'd hair was cut so short. The French Rvolution had a huge impact on clothing hair styles. Elaborate powdered wigs so commom in he 8th centuyry diappared as short cuts favoired by French revolutiinaries gradually became standard. Why ulktra-close, military cuts became standard for school boys we do mot know. This was common in Gernany and Eastern Europe for school age boys at the time. Hungary for several centuries was part of the Hapsburg-ruled Austrian Empire. The country at the time was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (1867-1918), retooled aranhement to give the Hungarians greater standing. Pre-school boys, hoeever, might have long hair. This was especially common for boys from affluent families. After World War I, (1914-18) Hungary became idepenmdent, The custom of cloely cropping the hair of school age boys rapidly declined.
