Irish Families: Bronson Family (1958)

Irish families

Figure 1.--

We note the Bronsan family with nine children in 1958. They were a very poor family in Clounmellane, a rural area in County Kery. Ireland was still a very poor country. Most European countries had made considerable econimicc progress after Word War II/ Ireland less so. The German and other post-war European Economic Miracles had not yet had an impsct on Ireland. Ireland had not been damaged by the War and devestated countries in the Cintinentvery rapidly recovered. Ireland made relatively limited progress, Part of this was due to Btitish economic policies. Of course, the best known example of this was the Potato Famine, but many other Britiush poolicies impoaired the development of a thruiving economy. The cfailure to develop a prospperous economy was alson due to the socialist policies adoptted by the Irish Free State and independent Ireland after World War II. It was widely thought at the time that socialism s the abswer to poverty and undedevelopment. The result was failure in Eastern Europe and much of the developing world . The Asian Tigers would show that it was capitalism that could transform poor economies. Few countries in Western Europe had familes living in such conditions by this time. Free market capitalist policies would subsequently transform Ireland creating the Celtic Tiger.
