Italian Religious Processions: Monserrato

Monserrato fresco
Figure 1.-- Monserrato is a small town near Cagliari in southern Sardinia. In the town there is a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and every year a procession takes place. It is an old tradition of the town, but like many popular traditions, there are no written documents and no images from ancient times. This is a fresco mural painted in the chapel where the statue of the Virgin is kept. Fresco was a major art form during the Renaissance, but tragically are difficult to preserve over the centuries. This was one was painted by modern local artists (1990) and is called 'The ancient procession'.

This was one was painted by modern local artists (1990) and is called 'The ancient procession'. They were able to base the scene depicted in the mural on their childhood memories, but also on the stories of older people. The statue was the same used today, but it was different the crown. The people wore traditional costumes and all the children were barefoot, including the altar boys. This looks to take us back to the 18th century, but of course some of these poressions data back to the medieval era and sometimes as far back as ancient Rome. Actually as the early Church adopted or incorporated many existing Roman traditions, some may have roots in pre-Roman times.
