Italian Photography: Formats -- Snapshots

Italian photography
Figure 1.--Here we see a dated Italian snapshot. It was taken in 1958. It has a rugged edging and not only is there no margin, but the image continues into he edging.

The Italian term for snapshot is 'istantanea'. We are not sure why that is because until fir Polaroid and then digital photography, the snapshot was not instantaneous. This is a little difficult to research on the internet because the English tern snapshot has a non-photographic meaning, an impression or view of something that bis brief or transitory. We have a general understanding of snapshot history. What we do not have is details on the snapshot in Italy. here was some amateur photography in he 19th century, bu it was complicated and expensive. Ordinary people could not taken photographs in the 19th century. This all changed in America with the Kodak Brownie (1900). This quickly spread to Europe with Kodak the initial leader, but gradually other countries entered the industry in major countries. This is what we do have information on in Italy. But we understand the general development. While a relatively poor country, Italy was a highly divided country. Northern Italy was more like the rest of Western Europe. So we do begin to see snapshots from Italy in the early-20h century. And we gradually see more as the century progressed. Mussolini's Fascism failed to significantly address the issues of poverty (1920s-30s) and than Fascism led Italy into the disaster of World War II (1939-45). What did change Italy was democracy and post-War European unification which led to the Italian Economic Miracle (1950s). We suddenly see snap shots on the same level as the rest of Western Europe. Many snapshots are undated, but in addition to the image clues was the characteristics of the snapshot such as edging and margins.
