Veneto is the most important northeastern Italian region. It begins in the Dolomites or Pale Mountains This is a mountain range, part of the Southern Limestone Alps and extend from the river Adige in the west to the Piave Valley in the east. From the Dolomites Veneto extends to the Adriatic coiast. It is the fourth most populous region in Italy. The capital is Venice, a rare important Italian city that does not hve ancient roots. Venice is located a shallow lagoon, During the Roman era, it was swapy not very inviting area which is why when the Germanic Barbarians invaded the Empire, Rialto provided a kind of gepographic sanctuary. This was the basis for the rise of a major power. Venice is famed for its canals, Gothic architecture, and extravagant Carnival celebrations. Venice dominates most accounts of Veneto, byt Verano also has some fame. It is the setting for several Shakespeare plays. Presumably because Verona was already famous in England for a tragic love story.
Veneto was the center of the powerful Venetian Republic for more than 1,000 years (7th-18th centuries). This is about the same length as the era of ancient Rome. Venice with its long history is one of the most engaging cities in the world with a long history. Along with the Byzantin Empire, Venice was a bulwarkagainst Ottoman expanion into Chritian Europe. Bzanantine Cotatinople fell (1492). Venice did not. It would be contolled by Austria for some time. It only be part of the Kingdom of Italy (1866). bOne reader has provided us some interesting information about San Giorgio della Richinvelda, a small village in Veneto.
