Figure 1.--This Dutch CDV is undated. We would guess it was taken about 1880. He wears a traditional sailor suit with a striped dickie and bloomer knickers. Notice the shoulder patch. He holds a ship's wheel. The studio was Reesinck in Zutphen & Deventer. The shrp corners of the CDV mount mean an early CDV in Britain and America. We are less sure about the Netherlands, but may mean it was taken in the 70s.

We do not know yet when the sailor suit was first worn by Dutch boys or when it first became a popular style. The Netherlands had an important maritime tradition and thus sailor suits would seem to have been a natural style to beomne popular s soon as they began to be worn in Britain. Our 19th century Dutch archive is very limited. We suspect it was similar to trends in Germany. The sailor suit does appear to have been widely worn by Dutch boys the 1880s. We do not notice any destinctive features of Dutch sailor suits. Shoulder patches may help identify some. We do not see the white string ties that were popular with German sailo suits, probably rflecting naval uniform styles. We notice striped dickies, but are unsure how common this was. We notice the standard three-stripe styling. Sailor suits were normally worn with knee pants or knickers worn with long stockings.
