Indian poetry
Figure 1.--Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri (1926-2020) was an Indian poet and essayist who wrote in Malayalam language. Born in Amettikkara near Kumaranellur in the Palakkad district of the southwestern Indian state of Kerala. He studied Sanskrit, traditional astrology, and music. Here is a photo of him with his father and siblings. He is the older boy standing with a book.

Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri (1926-2021) was an Indian poet and essayist who wrote in Malayalam language. This is a Dravidian language spoken primarily in the Indian state of Kerala and to a limited extent in neighboring states by the Malayali people. It is one of 22 scheduled languages of India. Malayalam was designated a 'Classical Language of India" (2013). ( We also notice a Vishnunarayanan Namboothiri. We are not sure if tey are the same person.) He was born in Amettikkara near Kumaranellur in the Palakkad district of the southwestern Indian state of Kerala (1939). Here is a photo of him with his father and siblings. He is the older boy standing with a book. His brother Akkitham Narayanan is a world famous painter and sculptor settled in Paris and son Akkitham Vasudevan is an eminent artist lives and works in Vadodara. We can see that his father was a Brahmin. Everyone in the photo is wearing traditional clothing. Akkitham is the only one wearing a shirt. This family is clearly strongly connected to tradition. It was common to go barefoot and shirtless, and even unclothed for younger children. He received a traditional education of Vedas, Puranas and Sanskrit from his grandfather at home. He then studed in Indian schools and universities. He bwas an excellet student often tpping he class. While pursued literature and religioin as an adult, he was also a gifted mathamiician. In fact his first job was teaching math whch is rather interesting. In the West, poetryand math often do not mix. .
