This photogrphn was taken in 2014 in Bihar, one of India's poorer states if not poorest states. (Data differs.) Bihar is located in northern India where much of India's poverty is centered. We are not sure why. It was not always the case. The powerful monsoons may be a factor. (West coast states report better data.) Varying trends over time suggest that this was not the main factor. High rates of population growth may also be a factor. Here we see a family in front of their modest home. Notice the different clothing according to age and gender. The grandfather wears a traditional lungi, while the father wears western style clothes. He is the only one who is shod. The mother is wearing a sari and the children casual Western-style garments. They would have been a Hindu family. We are not sure how they were seen in India. They probably look poor to Western eyes. But we are not sure Indians will see them as poor. India has created complicated methodologies for defining poverty. Income is only part of the calculation, and not the most important part of the assessment.
