Portuguese Boys' Shirts: Plaid Shirts

Figure 1.--There is also a tradition among Porthguese fishermen to wear plaid. We see this very common among the families of fishermen. Boys very commonly wore plaid shirts. This was not common throughout Portugal only in fishing villages. We have no idea why. Here we see a mother and her two boys in the 1950s. The phorograph was taken in Nazaré, a fishing village.

. One phenomenon that we do notice is how common that plaid shirts were, especially in fishing communities. We are not sure why this was, but is very noticeable in the photographic record. We notice boys wearing plaid shirts in many fishing villages. A good exmple is Nazaré We do not see plaid shirts to any extent in non-fishing Portunguese communities or for that matter elsewhere in Europe. We even see plaid pants in some cases, but this was less common than the plaid shirts. This seens exclusively a boys' shirt style. We are not sure about the 19th century, but plaid was very prominent in the first half of the 20th century. We have no idea why this was. Of course fishermen unlike most other Portuhese travdeled long distances and came into contact with other Atlantic coast Europeans. We have, however, how this led to the popularity plaid and when it first began.
