Swedish Summer Camps: Chronology

Figure 1.--This is a summer at Hofors, Sweden some time in the 1950s. The children are wearing different sort of clothing including short pants and romper pants. The romper pants seem popular with girls. This looks to like a day camp, but unfortunately we have no details about the cap.

We have been unable to find a histoy of Swedish summer camps. Without a definitive history we are left to assess chronological trends on the basis of available photpgraphic images. Perhaps readers will have some information. We are not sure when summer camping began in Sweden. We note Swedish boys going to summer camp in the years after World War I. The scenee here is a good example in 1925 (figure 1). This seems to be an effort for underprivlidged city children. The idea wa to get them out into the country side for some fresh air and sunshine and good food. Camps until World War II seem to have been mostly single-gnder experiences. And we notice photographic images of summer camps in the 1950s. Coed summer camps seem to be popular in the years aftr Workd War II. We are not sure if these were sleep-away camps or day camps. Some of the images se have fojnd look more like day camps. And we notice various specialized camps being offered in the early-21st century. The Church of Sweden provides confirmation camps, usually combined with a range of outdoor activities. We are unsure just when the Church and other specialized camps began. Modern Sweden is a prosperous country. Thre seems to be less need than befor for charity camps, but we have little information on who funds the camps in Sweden today.
