Here we see photos from the album of Holmström family family. They were Swedish, but owned a vacation home on Hirvensalo Island, in southern Finland. Victor Westerholm creatd a painting of a summer house on Hirvensalo Island (1903). The photos were taken during the early-20th century. One was takem in June or July 1914, just before the War broke out. They were a well to do family but not apparently fabulously wealthy. What is paricularly interesting about these photogrphs is the quiet normality of life in Europe before World War I. Sweden was able to stay out of the War, but th oges would havebeen simlar to most other European countries as well as American during the Summer. The early 20h century was an period of great achiebement. Most Europeans saw war as unlikely and that science was soving major problems--an era of progressive optimim. The photographs were probly wken inJune or July as the War broke out in August when Germany attacked France though Belgium (aAuhut 4, 1914). Wages wwre rising, public health systems were fictioning, and women were on the brink of obtaining the vote but still prmrily focused on the home.
