Polish Boys' Clothes: Garments--Hosiery Types

Figure 1.--

We note Polish children wearing a variety of hosiery over time. We do not yet have a very extensive archive of Polish images so we can not yet assess hosiery trends in great detail. We note many images of Polish boys wearing long stockings. We have very little information on the 19th cdntgury. We do not boys extensively wearing long stockings in the 20th century. We see many Polish boys wearing long stockings into the 1950s on a seasonal basdis. We see boys wearing three-quarter socks in the early-20th century. Some boys wire sandals without socks during the summer. We note Polish boys wearing ankle socks, but do not yet have a detailed chronology. We mostly see them after World war II. They seem to have been initially a seasonal summer item. Gradually they became the standard hosiery type. Polish boys like German boys wore long stockings well after they went out of style in many other European countries. Polish readers inform HBC that tights were also common, although we do not know when they first appeared. As in East Germany, they appear to have replaced long stockings.

Ankle Socks

We note Polish boys wearing ankle socks, but do not yet have a detailed chronology. We know very little about the 19th century. We do have some information on the 20th century. We mostly see them after World war II. They seem to have been initially a seasonal summer item. Gradually they became the standard hosiery type.

Knee Socks

Knee socks see very popular in the first half of the 20th century. Like long stovkings, they seem to have been worn seasonally.

Long Stockings

We note many images of Polish boys wearing long stockings. We have very little information on the 19th cdntgury. We do not boys extensively wearing long stockings in the 20th century. This appears to have been the case throughout the 20th centuyry through the mid-20th century. Polish boys even in the 60s were wearing long stockings. There was a strong seasonal component to long stockings. They were very widely worn as a cold weather garment, in part because boys commonly wore knee pants and short pants even during the winter. While long stickings were most commonly worn during the winter, they were not exclusively a winter garment. Another factor was modesty. This seems o have been more a factor for girls than boys. Another major use of long stockings was formslity. Children when dressing up for formal occassions such as church or family events often wore long stockings. We see children in many First Communion portraits wearing long stockings, both white and black long stockings. Polish boys like German boys wore long stockings well after they went out of style in many other European countries. We note clothing trends in post-War Poland.

Tights

Polish boys like German boys wore long stockings well after they went out of style in many other European countries. Polish readers inform HBC that tights were also common, although we do not know when they first appeared. As in East Germany, they appear to have replaced long stockings. Polish boys in the 1980s commonly wore tights. Tights continued to be widely worn by boys in the 1990s although perhaps not quite as commonly in the 1980s. Boys during the 1990s wore them until about 9-10 years of age, but a few boys even at 11 also wore them. The most common was to wear up to about age 10. A Polish reader who was a boy in the 1990s writes, "Well tights were very common in 1980s (it were really common) and so they were in 90s. I wore them, like almost everybody (except 3-4 kids I knew). I wore them commonly until I was 9 years old, after that I only wore them occassionally. But some of my mates used to wore them up to even the age of 11! But most of kids used to wore them up to the age of 10.") That was the standard, because at age 10 kids finish there first primary education. Polish readers tell us that boys still commonly wear tights in Poland. were also common, although we do not know when they first appeared. As in East Germany, they appear to have replaced long stockings. Polish boys in the 1980s commonly wore tights. Tights continued to be widely worn by boys in the 1990s although perhaps not quite as commonly in the 1980s. >
