Scottish Boys' Headwear: Hats

Figure 1.-- This CDV shows two Scottish boys, presumably brothers, wearing sailor hats probably with streamers although you can not se them. At least one of the boys wears a sailor suit, you can see the back flap. We are not sure about the date. The dealer suggests the 1879s. We wold not rule out the early-80s. The studio was Ja Milne in Arbroath.

Hats were not very common for Scottish boys. Headwear was common, but not hats. One exception was sailor hats. We do see younger boys wearing wide-brimmed sailor hats ith streamers. These were worn by pre-school boys or boys in the younger primary forms. They were worn with sailor suits as well as non-sailor outfits. We also notice straw boaters Older boys tended to wear variuous types of caps, including of course Scottish styls. Older teenagers might begin to wear adult styled hats s worn in England, but we see few boys wearing them. Our Scottish archive is still limited, but as far as can yell from the photogrhic record, this was the general trend.
