Spokane is the second largest ciy in Wahington after Seattle. It is located in eastern Washington state near the Idaho border. It is located along the Spokane River, west of the Rocky Mountain foothills and about 100 miles south of the Canadian border. Spokane began after the Louisina Purchase (1803) as a trading post of the North West Company's Spokane House (1810). The attraction was the fur trade. It was the the first long-term European settlement in Washington. A major step in the city;s develooment with the completion of the Northern Pacific Railway (1881). Gold and silver were discovered in the Inland Northwest(late-19th century). The local economy exoanded with on mining, timber, and agriculture. A lot of people in eastern Washinon and Oregon would now like to join Idaho. Riverfront Park was the site of the 1974 World's Fair has a sculpture walk. A cable car offers views over tumbling Spokane Falls. Expo '74 was the first environmentally themed World's Fair. Manito Parkis a 90-acre public park now with arboretum, botanical gardens, and conservatory. Manito Park was officially established in (April 1904). It has evolved from an undeveloped recreational area began with a few flower beds, picnic spots, and a playground. A zoo was eventually added. I is noe one of Spokane's primary showplaces. There are five major garden areas (the Nishinomiya Tsutakawa Japanese Garden, Duncan Garden, Rose Hill, Lilac Garden and Ferris Perennial Garden). The Park is notable for its diverse botanical offerings. There are now other popular features. Mirror Pond is popular for its ducks and other water fowl. Park Bench Café offers light meals. Loop Drive and Bridge offers majestic views of the Rose Garden. Thee are Upper and Lower Playgrounds favorite attraction for the children. The Gaiser Conservatory is renounded for beautiful flowing seasonal displays.
