Here we have an Ambrotype portrait of an unidentified family. Ambros appeared in the mid-1850s. And were very common (1855-62). Here the father is missing. This suggests to us that the portrait was taken during the Civil War (1861-63) and father is away at the front. The Civil War of course lasted until 1865, but after 1863 we see far fewer ambros--mostly CDVs. And then about 1866 we begin to see cabinet cards. Father is probably still alive bcause mother is not wearing mourning black. CDVs appeard began to appear (1860), but we still see Ambros in the early-60s. There are four younger children poviding insights on period fashion. They look to be about 1-8 years old. The older boy wears a collar-buttoning long-pants suit with a white collar. His litle brother wears a collarless blouse with half sleeves and button-on pants. Men and boys at the time wore long-sleeve shirts. The little girl wears a dress with a low neckline. In this case we have interesting details on the Ambrotype elements that made up this cased portrait.
