United States Families: Young Family (Unknown states, mid-1860s)

Figure 1.--This CDV portrait shows an unidentified young family, meabing several younger children. The father looks older than the mother, not uncommon in the 19th century. There are four children, a baby, two gils and a boy. They look to age from a few months to about 8-9 years old. The boy is proably about 5 years old and wears a checked kilt suit with a small ruff at the collar. Collars in he 60s tended to be very small. He seems to be also wearing a matching vest-like garment under the jackrt but we do not see the buttons that go with a vest. There is no studio information.

This CDV portrait shows an unidentified young family, meaning several younger children. The father looks older than the mother, not uncommon in the 19th century. There are four children, a baby, two gils and a boy. They look to age from a few months to about 8-9 yer old. The boy is proably about 5 years old and wears a checked kilt suit with a small ruff at the collar. Bollars in he 60s tended to be very small. He seems to be also wearing a matching vest-like garment under the jacket but we do not see the buttons that go with a vest. He wears socks rather than long stockings. We see that in the 1860s, but not commomly by the 70s when long stockings became standard. The girl weas a white blouse with a prim bow and skirt which was not common in 19th century portrits. Usually girls wore dresses in these formal 19th century portraits. We believe that blouses and skirts were more common than suggested by the photographic record. The portait is undated. We believe the portait was taken in the mid-1860s, but after the Civil War becuse there is no revenue stamp. The dating is not certain, but items suggesting the 1860s are the small collar, the socks, a CDV rather than a cabinet card, and the plain background. There is no studio information.
