Here we see a cabinet card portrait of a moderately sized Boston family, we belive in the 1870s. We see mother and father with four children. Father has an impressive berard. We wonderbif he was a Civil War veteran. They look to be about 2-13 yeras old. One of the little girls has brought her dollbalong for the portrait. The girls all wear dresses. Note the elaborate decoratiion. and tiering. The boy wears a lapel suit with velvet trim. Note the simple string tie. The suit has a vest (westcoat) that matches the suit. Earlier, vests were often done in colors or patterns to contrast with thev rest of the suit. He wears the longish knee pants that were still common in the 1870s with the striped long stockings also popular at the time. He has low-cut shoes despite the fact that high-top shoes were becoming standard. Note that his sister wears high tops along with the striped long stockings. Ready-made clothing was beginning to become important by the 1870s, but we suspect the outfits here were home sewn. The only actual information about the portrait is that it was from the studio of Allen & Rowell (Edw. L. Allen & Frank Rowell) in Boston, Massachusetts.
