This CDV is undated, but looks to have been taken in the early-1870s. The rounded corners help date it. By this time the CDV was being replaced by the larger, more popular cabinet cards. We see a small family with two children (6-10 years old), a boy and girl. The boy wears a long pants sack suit with a wide lapel. It appears to have a vest. Knee pants appeared in the 1860s, but we continue to see even younger boys wearing long pants in the early-1870s. The convention for younger boys to wear shortened-length pants was not yet universally established. The boy's older sister wears a non-descript dress with a small lace collar and defined waist. The bearded father wears a rather loud patterned suit. Mother wears a dress similar to that her daughter wears. The sudio was C. Edwards in Courland in south central New York state.
