American boys at the time allmost always wore long stockings with suits. We suspect it was summer and he was more comfortable without the stockings. They might even be a summer cottage. We might have guessed the photograph was takena few years earlier because he was wearing knee pants and not knickers. The fact that a boy is quitely readung a book inside with his grandfather in the summerr alsp suggested a well off, educated family.
