Figure 1.-- This is a portrait of the Varela family in Washinton, D.C. during 1922. Their husband and father was Jacobo Varela, their Uruguayan Ministerto the United States. There are three children about 8-15 years old, Odele, Jacobo Jr., and Mireya. The children were growing up in Washinton, D.C. but were actually Uruguayans. The children are dessed like American children. The youngst dughter even wears a sailor dress with U.S. Navy detailing.

This is a portrait of the Varela family in Washinton, D.C. during 1922. Their husband and father was Jacobo Varela, their Uruguayan Ministerto the United States. There are three children about 8-15 years old, Odele, Jacobo Jr., and Mireya. The children were growing up in Washinton, D.C. but were actually Uruguayans. The children asre dessed like American children. The youngst dughter even wears a sailor dress with U.S. Navy detailing. She is wearing the blouse of an American second class petty officer with a battle E on the left sleeve. Notice the hair bow. Hair bows were very common in the 1910s, but began to decline in popularity during the 1920s. Both girls wear long stockings, black and white long stockings. The boy wears knee socks wih above the knee knickers. The younger girl wears black Mary Jane strap shoes. We are not sure how differently the children would have dressed at home because we have so little information on Uruguay. We believe that Argentine and Uruguyan fashions were very similar. At the time, European fashions were more influential in Argentina than American fahions. They are posed on the front steps of heir row house home. Row houses were very common in Washington.
