American Families: Miller Family--Allen Jr. (Illinois )

1920s family
Figure 1.--This is Allen Jr. with his little brother Robert making friends with the dog on their grandparents farm about 1922. Notice the flat, treeless landscape of the Northern Plains.

The Millers came from a Swedish farm family, but they did not all end up farming in America. Allen Sr. wasn't a farmer. Allen Jr. was his son who lived with him in Illinois. In the photos in North Dakota, he was visiting his grandparents and aunts and uncles, not living there. The Miller farms were on the northern plains which were not as badly affected by the Dust Bowl as on the southern plains in the 1930s. The photo gives a good idea of how flat and treeless the plains were. Notice how he dressed. Families on the farm dressed different until after World War II. Overalls were very common. Notice that Allen is dressed more like a city boy. Allen Jr. got his degree in business from Augustana College and worked for the same insurance company his entire life, except for a short time during World War II. During that time he was in the Army Air Corp.
