We have much more information once photography appeared in the mid-19th century. Commercial photography was invented in France--the Daguerreotype (1839). The induistry sptrad very rapidlt in America (1840s). More rapidly than in Europe. Unfortunately, very few Dags are dated. And we are unble to diffeferentiate reliavly between 1840s and 50s Dags. (There were some Dags taken in the 60s, but not very many.) And we have a special problem with headwear, because very few children were photographed with headwear in studios, espcially for Dag portraits. We are not sure why, lighting may have been a factor. Whstever the reason, we have found very few Dag portaits with the subjects wearing headwear. The only photographic portraits we have of headwear are Dags. This would only change with the advent of the CDV (1860s). Our information is limited, but as far as we can tell, hats were more prevalnt than caps.
