We have collected several images of individual American boys showing them before and after breeching. Here the time frame varies somewhat. We note an unidentified brother and sister from West Union, Iowa, we believe in the 1890s (figure 1). in the 1890s. All we know about these children is that they were a brither and sister and they were from West Union, Iowa. The mount type indicates that the first portrait was taken about 1890. Both children wjo look to be about 2-5 years old wear dresses. The boy wears a light-colored plsid sress wih shirt-like sleeves. There is blsack velvet trim at the collar, waist and cuffs. He has a small boe. His little sister wears a white dess with lace trim. To see the second portrait with the children about 5 years laster in a portrait by the same photographer, M.E. Hawkins, put your cursor on the image. The boy is now wearing a knee pants suit. We are not sure just when he was breeched. As there was a 5 year difference in the two portrasits, we are not sure just when he was breeched. Given that he was sabout 5 years old in the first portrait, we would guess he was breeched about 6 years of age which wold have been when he began school.
