Here we see what was left of the Sears' family home after he Great Miami Hurricane of 1926 (figure 1). Florida was a growing, but still minor state in 1920--ranking 31st in the nation. Petroleum industrialst Henry Morrison Flagler (1830–1913) had played a major role in brining the warm sunny climate to the attention of Americans. Americans had more time to travel and invest in real estate. The Roaring Twenties and the fortunes created resulted in a landboom and by the end of the decade decaded the population had increased from 1.0 to 1.5 million people. Many people came unawareof the hurriucane dangers. 1926 Hurricane slowed, but did not stop the movemen bo Florida, but theadvent of air conditioning after World War II only intensifed the movement. Flrida today is the hird most populace state in the Unoin. And unlike California continues to grow. Sears is a famous name in American retailing, but we know nothing about the Sears family here or the boy's first name. He is wearing a one piece outfit with a self belt--a popular outfit for boys at the time.
