Generalmajor Otto Ernst Remer was a decorated German Army officer who served during in the major campaigns of World War II beginning in Poland. Maj. Remer who had been wounded seveal times and highly decorated had been given command of a guards unit in Berlin -- Wachbataillon Großdeutschland (March 1944). It was here that he entered history. He is best known for his role in supressing the Valkyrie bomb plot against NAZI Führer Adolf Hitler (July 20, 1944). The plotters failed to kill Hitler, but were proceeding with plans to take power in Berlin. Oberst Claus Graf von Stauffenberg thinking that he had sucessfully killed Hitler after arriving back in Berlin, set in motion a plan to seize control of the Government. General Paul von Hase orderd Remer to arrest Minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels. Remer proceeded to the Ministry of Popaganda, fully intending to do so. Goebbels protested, insisting that Hitler had survived. He put Hitler still at the Wolf's Lair in East Prussia on the phone. Remer recognized Hitler's voice. Shaken but alive, Hitler ordered Remer to arrest the coop plotters. This was more imprtant than often understood. The fighting had not yet reached the Reich and the bombing had not yet reached its full strength. It is only after the coup fled that the Allied bombers began to intensly bomb German cities. Gen. Eisenhower was given comtrol of the bombers to suport the D-Day Lndings (March-August 1944). After the War, Remer entered German politics and became a major Holocaust denier. After the War, Germans tended to see the Bomb Plot planners as tritors. This attitude did not begin to change (until the mid-1950s). He became an imprtantfigure in neo-NAZI politics. As a result, Remer spent many years in Egypt, Syria, and Spain to evade German procecution and promote anti-semitism.
