British Children in World War II: Contributions

British World War II children's art
Figure 1.--This is a display of children's are in London during World War II. The caption read, "The War thriugh Children's Eyes: This war poster by Chinese child artists, evidently showing the eventual flight of the Jap emperor before vengeful workers of China, hilds the interest of this English boy." The photigraph was faed Feryuary 18, 1943. The boy seenms to be with his mother.

Children's art is another interesting topic. The most famous such art is the work of the children in the Theresienstadt Ghetto camp. This was billed by the NAZIs as a model camp. And the children there were able to produce some art. In other ghettos, schools were not allowed, let alone were art supplies. Tragically most of the children at Theresienstadt were murdered by the Germans after a Red Cross visit. As the Germans cleared the ghettos before or on arrival in the camps because they were non-workers. Children's art work in other countries generally did not survive the War. Art supplies were rare in occupied countries. But art work would have been common in American and British schools. Britain was ion the front line with the Battle of Britain and the Blitz (1940-41). What they saw depended on where they lived. It was mostly the children in London and other cities that experienced the bombing. After this the children saw little of the War until The Germans began launching the V weapons, mostly at London (1944-45). There main experience during the War thus would have been separation from loved ones. Many British children were evacuated from the cities. This was, however, voluntary. So there were children in London even during the Blitz. We have been unable to find much of the art produced by children. We have found an exhibition in London of children's art work (1943). We do not know who put it on. And all we have at this time is a single photograph of some of the pieces on display.
