World War II German Homefront: Children's Games

Figure 1.--The children in 1943 are engaged in a big contruction project. I'm nt surewhat they arebuilding, perhaps a fort. The waggon in the background suggests that thechildren lived in a small town or villge.

We are not sure how children's play was affected by the War. This is an interesting topic that we hope to persue. We have begun to collect some images, but do not yet have a sufficent number to reach any real conclusions. A reader writes, "My observation of World War II photography suggests that boys incorporated war themes in their games. I also note photographs from the Nazi ghettos in Poland showing children playing games that incorporated themes of their surroundings."
