German Mail Order Catalogs with Boys Clothings: 1907

Figure 1.-- A reader has sent us a 1907 advertisement for winter clothing. The publicatiomn seems to have offered patterns. It primarily portrays winter clothing, but one boy's outfit is shown with the girls. The boy wears a brimless cap, winter blouse, and knee pants. Both the boys and girls wear black long stockings. You can see the back of two dresses in the background.

We have very little information on German 1907 fashions. A reader has sent us a 1907 advertisement for winter clothing. It primarily portrays winter clothing, but one boy's outfit is shown with the girls. The boy wears a brimless cap, winter blouse, and knee pants. Both the boys and girls wear black long stockings. Interestingly, the boy is not wearing a sailor cap, but his cap has the name of a German naval vessel, the SMS Kronprinz.

Headwear

Notice the brimless cap the boy here is wearing (figure 1). Interestingly, the boy is not wearing a sailor cap, but his cap has the name of a German naval vessel, the SMS Kronprinz.

Coats

Here we see a younger girl wearing a winter coat. The ad copy read, " 6. Mantel mit Epauletteteilen. Rückansicht: Abb.3. Normalschnitte in 3 Größen für das Alter von 6-12 Jahren." That translates as, "6. Coat with epaulette parts. Back view: ill.3. Standard cuts in 3 sizes for the age of 6-12 years." We see a coat for a younger girl. The ad copy reads, "11. Mantel mit Schulterkragen. Normalschnitte in 3 Größen für das Alter von 2-8 Jahren." That translates as, "11 Coat with shoulder collar. Standard cuts in 3 sizes for the age of 2-8 years." Notice the muffs that the girls are holding.

Ice Skating Costume

Ice skating must have been very popular in Germany. There seem to have been been special ice skating dresses for girls. I think this mean a dress with a matching warm jacket. The ad copy for the first dress read, " 7. Kostüm mit plissiertem Rock für Mädchen von 12-14 Jahren. Rückansicht: Abb.9. Schnitt: Schnittmusterbeilage, Nr.VII. Fig.42-48. Normalschnitte in 2 Größen für das Alter von 12-16 Jahren." This meant, "7. Costume with pleated skirt for girls of 12-14 years. Back view: ill.9. Cut: pattern supplement # VII. ig.42-48. Standard cuts in 2 sizes for the age of 12-16 years." The ad copy for the other outfit read, "8. Schlittschuhkostüm für junge Mädchen. Normalschnitte in 2 Größen für das Alter von 12-16 Jahren." This meant, "8. Ice-skating costume for young girls. Back view: ill.10. Standard cuts in 2 sizes for the age of 12-16 years." Backviews of these two outfits can be seen in the background of the illustrtion (figure 1). The third girl's ice skating outfit was also depicted. The ad copy read, "12. Schlittschuhkleid mit kurzem Jäckchen. Rückansicht ohne Jäckchen. Abb.2. Normalschnitte in 2 Größen für das Alter von 8-12." That translates as, "12 Ice-skating dress with short jacket. Back view without jacket : ill 2 Standard cuts in 2 sizes for the age of 8-12 years."Jahren." The back view is not depicted in the illustration, but on another page.

Suits

The term suit (Anzug) was a generic term. It mean that the top matched or coordinated with the trousers. Thus a blouse could make up a suit. There were various jackets, bith lapel and collar-buttoining jackets that were worn as a suit wuth matching trousers. There were quite a variety of styles. There were also blouses that were used for suits. This seems to have been more of a fall and winter style when heavier material was used for the blouses. Here we see a boy's blouse suit. As it was for winter wear, it is a heavy blouse. The ad copy read, "13. Blusenanzug mit anliegendem Beinkleid. Normalschnitte in 3 Größen für das Alter von 8-14 Jahren." That meant, " 13 Suit with blouse and tight-fitting trousers. Standard cuts in 3 sizes for the age of 8-14 years."
