German Blouse Suit / Blusenanzug: 1907

Figure 1.-- A reader has sent us a 1907 advertisement for winter clothing. The publicatiomn seems to have offered patterns. It primarily portrays winter clothing, but one boy's outfit is shown with the girls. The boy wears a brimless cap, winter blouse and knee pants suit--a blouse suit or Blusenanzug. Both the boys and girls wear black long stockings. You can see the back of two skating outfits n the background.

A reader has sent us a 1907 German advertisement for winter clothing. The publicatiomn seems to have offered patterns. We do not know the name of the magazine or catalog. Notice the brimless cap the boy here is wearing (figure 1). Interestingly, the boy is not wearing a sailor cap, but his cap has the name of a German naval vessel, the SMS Kronprinz. The term suit (Anzug) was a generic term. It mean that the top matched or coordinated with the trousers. Thus a blouse could make up a suit. There were various jackets, bith lapel and collsar-buttoining jackets that were worn as a suit wuth matching trousers. There were quite a variety of styles. There were also blouses that were used for suits. This seems to have been more of a fall and winter style when heavier material was used for ythe blouses. Here we see a boys blouse suit. As it was for winter wear, it is a heavy blouse. The ad copy read, "13. Blusenanzug mit anliegendem Beinkleid. Normalschnitte in 3 Größen für das Alter von 8-14 Jahren." That meant, " 13 Suit with blouse and tight-fitting trousers. Standard cuts in 3 sizes for the age of 8-14 years." The blouse was worn with a floppy bow. The knee pants have side pockets. We think that the ad copy stresses the tight-fitting knee pants to differentisate the pants from the loose-fittijg bloomer knickers that boys also wore at the time. The boy is also depicted wearing black long stockings which the girls also wear. The children are also wearing high-top shoes with their skates. Th girls seem to have specuial skating outfits. The boy here seems to have worn ordinary clothes.
