Most school age boys, including younger teenagers, wore knickers suits. There were also a range of outfits for younger boys. Some younger boys also had knicker suits, but there was a wide range of juvenile outfits worn by pre-school and younger grade school children. We notice a range of these destinctively styled outfits. There were tunic suits and a range of button-on outfits that might be called Oliver Twist suits. Tunic suits which appeared at vthe turn-of-the 20th century were still very popular and offered in many different styles. Quite a range of these outfits were offered in the Sears catalog (figure 1). It is a rare color image which is very helpful. Westill see miostly blck and white images at the time. We note a Lux advertisment showing pre-school clothes. We also notice three patterns offered for boys' "school clothes" in the Ladies Home Journal (September 1917). Mothers were encouraged to sew clothes for younger boys who were going back to school in September. The patterns here, however, do not look much like the school clothes we see in the photographic record.
