Arnold Constable Catalog: Inclement Weather Wear for Younger Children (1920s)

We are not sure when the catalog was issued, but believe it was during the 1920s. Arnold Constable & Company was a New York department store chain. It was the oldest department store in America and one of the most prestigious store participating in the carriage trade. We see a range of items for both boys and girls. The sizes were 2 to 6 years of age which means basically pre-school children. Most xhildren began school at age 6 years. Note that despite the fact that their or itens for the girls here, nothing was done in pink..

The ad copy read, "170: Knitted Snow Pants, warm and comfy. Made of heavy worsted. To be had in navy or camel colorings. Sizes 2 to 6 .......... 2.95."

171: A Slip-On Sweater

The ad copy read, "171: A Slip-On Sweater for the little-girl-who-plays-in-the-snow! All wool with a smart Jac-guard design. Comninatio of powder blue and gold. 2 to 6 ......... 1.75." Notice the girl is illustrated wearing leggings.

172: A Knitted Snow Set

The ad copy read, "172: A 4-piece Knitted Snow Set that keeps all cold tickles out. Cap, mittens, sweater, legging,. In buff or heather blue. 2 to 6 ............ 5.95."

173: A Coat Sweater

The ad copy read, "173: A Coat Sweater of all wool. A warm affair 'that satifies'. In buff or heather blue. 2 to 6 ............ 2.50." Many of the boys here are pictured wraring short panrs and knee socks, but only the tops weere oin sale,.

174: A Scotch Plaid Rubber Rain Set

The ad copy read, "174: A Scotch Plaid Rubber Rain Set--hat, coat and umbrella. A gay little costume for gray rainy days! Sizes 2 to 4 .......... 6.75. Sizes 5 and 6 with heavier umbrella 7.95"

175: A Slip-On Sweater

The ad copy read, "175: A Slip-On Sweater with narrow white stripesas edging at collar , cuffs and bottom. A practicl and good looking model. In rose leaf, powder blue, Lanvin green. 2 to 6 ......... 1.95." We are not sure what rose leaf was. Most of the colors here are blues and tans.

176: Boys' Knitted Suit

The ad copy read, "176: Boys' Kitted 2-piece Suit of 100% wool. Tight cuffs that keep small wrists warm. In tan or heather blue. 2 to 6 ............ 2.95."

177: The 'Dog' Sweater

The ad copy read, "177: The 'dog' sweater--a model exclusive with Arnold Constable-- is of Silver Glow yarn. Hand knit on frame. An amusing small embroidered dog. In Nile, copen, tan. 2 to 6 ............ 2.95." The illustration shows a girl wearing this sweater with leggings.

178: A Scotch Plaid Doll Set

The ad copy read, "178: A Scotch Plaid Doll Set--an exact replicaof its little rain-coated mother. Doll 18 inches high. ............ 2.95."
