American Catalogs: Lane Bryant Button-on-Shorts Set (1927)


Figure 1.-- Catalog and retailer Lane Byant offered a shorts set in sizes 3-8 years. They didn't use the term, but this was a major fashion for American boys and began with the 1920s. A factor here is that they were were button-on outfits. Here the shirts and pants had to be purchased together to be sure the buttons on the shirts matched up with the button-holes in the waistline of the pants.

Here the shirts and pants had to be purchased together to be sure the buttons on the shirts matched up with the button-holes in the waistline of the pants. Also notice what lookmlike cuffs and the knee hem. the Lane Bryant ad copy read, "9e2271 --Th beauty of this Khaki Jeans Suit is that it doesn;t show the dirt, it washes well nd is very inexpensive. The suit is is two-poece, has two pockets on the blouse and a novelty webbing belt. The trousers are stright-leg and cofortable. Just the kind of suit every boy loves. And mothrs find it indispensable to the youthful wardrobe. SIZES: 3, 4. 5. 6, 7 and 8 years. Price ...98c. We pay postage." The term suit here here means that the blouse and pants match. Straight-leg means that they were not knickers. The term wash-suit also became popular to describe these outfits taht could be easily wshed. Jean material made for excellent play clothes that could easily be washed without staining, fading, or shrinking. The age range extended from the last toddler year to the early elementarty (primary) school ages.
